How can organisations overcome perfectionism paralysis?
Despite it being over 2 years since George Floyd’s murder and the conversations and commitments to racial equity and gender equity, organisations are a lot closer to the starting line and having discussions than taking action.
With so many research reports, coming out, confirming that there is no discernible change, the question has to be, why is this the case?
There are several factors at play.
The fear of getting it wrong and not only destroying careers but also businesses.
There is still no space being made in the decision-making circles to ensure that solutions are being co-created and not just suggested.
One recognisable sign of perfectionism paralysis, is that a lot of organisations make decisions and want to verify them in the market. The feeling of being in it together, when the truth is, each organisation needs bespoke solutions to cater to their challenges.
There is no best first step. there is only taking a step, the first but most important step, that reinforces the company's commitment to achieving gender equality and racial equity.
100 times nothing will always be nothing and that is the impression women in the business will be left with, despite senior decision-makers believing they have made progress, purely by having several conversations.
Inaction is a choice and even if the intention behind it is to change. The old adage "actions speak louder than words" is more important now than at any time in corporate history.
So don't let perfectionism paralysis be the reason your company fails to reach targets and your female staff show their opinions with their feet and reviews left behind on Glassdoor and within their friendship circles.
